Trial Day Tips - How to be prepared, positive & proactive
The trial day is an opportunity for you to show your suitability for the role and the school, and to demonstrate how you interact with children and young people in a formal educational setting. Practical trials allow you to :
- Engage with pupils
- Build rapport with staff
- Demonstrate initiative
Remember - feedback can come from anywhere
BE PREPARED
- Arrive early - You don't want to be late or rushed - plan your journey ahead of time!
- Dress to impress - Dress appropriately for your role. Tie up long hair and avoid dangly earrings.
- Photo ID and DBS Certificate - Remember your documents; you won’t be allowed into the school without them.
- Lunch - Don’t go hungry - just in case, take your own lunch (remember, no nuts!)
- Research - Read through the school website to learn about the school & prepare questions.
BE PROACTIVE
- Take initiative - Of course, it’s okay to ask questions - It's my first day - what do I need to know?’ But use your knowledge and experience to get involved.
- Help - The class Teacher already has a whole class to direct, lighten their load and help where you can.
- Talk to staff & get involved! - Use this opportunity to talk to various staff members and get to know them! If you are on playground duty, walk around and get to know the children!
BE POSITIVE
- Nerves are normal - It’s ok to feel nervous! Why? Because it means you care about making the right impression.
- Be friendly! - Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself! Building relationships from day one can smooth the transition and help you to feel part of the team.
- Mindset - Visualise yourself succeeding in your new role. A positive mindset will boost your confidence and reduce any anxiety.
- The bigger picture - Take a deep breath, relax and have fun! Remember that you are going for your trial to support children who need your help.
