About the Role
SEN Teaching Assistant – Autism, Complex Needs and SLD
Location: Mainstream & Specialist SEND Schools
Contract Type: Full-Time | Long-Term
Start Date: Immediate / Flexible
Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with Autism, Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD), and Complex Needs? We're looking for a dedicated and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to work in a supportive and rewarding educational environment where you can truly make a difference.
About the Role:
As a 1:1 or small group SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who require specialist, individualised support. These may include learners with:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Severe or profound learning difficulties(PMLD)
- Sensory processing needs
- Communication difficulties
- Emotional regulation challenges
- Physical or medical needs
You will play a key role in promoting access to learning, engagement, and emotional well-being, while following personalised learning and support plans developed with the wider team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing consistent, 1:1 or small group support tailored to the needs of each pupil
- Supporting emotional regulation and behaviour using therapeutic strategies
- Assisting with personal care and physical needs, where required
- Facilitating engagement through structured routines, sensory activities, and communication aids
- Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils, staff, and families
Ideal Experience & Skills:
- Knowledge or experience of Autism and Complex Needs
- Experience with Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
- PECS, Makaton or other communication systems
- Social Stories and visual supports
- Sensory Circuits and regulation tools
- Use of therapeutic approaches (e.g., Intensive Interaction, Zones of Regulation)
- School-based/Youth work experience - required
