We are currently seeking an experienced and emotionally intelligent Tutor to work 1:1 with a 17-year-old student with autism.

This is not a “sit at a desk and teach from a worksheet” kind of role. This is about building trust, forming a genuine connection, and helping a bright, complex young person re-engage with education—in a way that works for him.

You’ll be part educator, part mentor, part cheerleader—guiding him through academic work while also helping him explore his identity, manage emotions, and prepare for life beyond school.

This young man is highly intelligent, sharp-witted, and hilarious—with a serious side-eye for authority and a love of pushing the boundaries. His autism presents in a way that makes rigid routines, unfamiliar environments, and social demands challenging at times. But when he feels safe and heard? He shines.

He thrives on conversation, humour, and being intellectually stimulated, so you’ll need to be someone who can match his energy, listen deeply, and offer gentle but consistent structure.

There will be challenging moments—he’s still figuring out how to regulate his emotions—but this is also the kind of role where you’ll see real, meaningful progress and know it’s because of the relationship you built.

Responsibilities:

• Delivering tailored, 1:1 academic sessions in a quiet, supportive outreach centre
• Using a trauma-informed, autism-aware approach to build emotional regulation skills
• Working collaboratively with a wider network of professionals (mentors, therapists, etc.)
• Planning sessions that balance learning, self-esteem building, and future readiness
• Acting as a stable, consistent adult figure during a pivotal period of the student’s life.

What you will need:

• Experience working with autistic students in an education, outreach or SEN setting
• Confidence in managing challenging behaviours with empathy, not punishment
• A strong understanding of the sensory, social, and communication differences linked to autism
• Patience, a sense of humour, and a deep belief in every young person’s potential
• A valid enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
• Two references from similar role
