Autism Specialist Teacher – SEND School – Sutton
Start Date: September 2025

Are you a passionate and experienced SEND teacher looking for a deeply rewarding role? Do you have the skills, compassion, and resilience to support autistic pupils with complex sensory and behavioural needs?

We are seeking a dedicated Autism Specialist Teacher to join our dynamic and nurturing SEND school community in Sutton for September 2025. Our school supports pupils aged 5–19 with a range of complex needs, including autism, sensory processing challenges, stimming behaviours (including echolalia), dysregulation, and self-harm tendencies.

The Role:

You will lead a small, well-supported class, designing and delivering a highly personalised, engaging, and structured curriculum that prioritises emotional regulation, communication, independence, and self-esteem. The role requires a trauma-informed, autism-aware approach rooted in positive relationships and high expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create a safe, structured, and sensory-considerate environment for learners

  • Support and manage dysregulated behaviours using restorative, low-arousal strategies

  • Work closely with therapists, support staff, and families to create and review EHCP-driven provision

  • Use a combination of AAC, PECS, TEACCH, and other relevant strategies to promote communication and engagement

  • Monitor pupil progress through robust assessment systems, adapted to each learner’s profile

  • Model and reinforce consistent approaches to self-regulation, including responding appropriately to stimming, echolalia, and self-injurious behaviour

We Are Looking For:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS or equivalent) – experience in special schools is essential

  • Proven success working with autistic pupils with high sensory needs and dysregulation

  • Knowledge of autism-specific interventions and trauma-informed practice

  • Patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to stay calm under pressure

  • A collaborative team player who thrives in a multidisciplinary setting
