About the Role
Teaching Assistant - 1:1 Support for a Child with Autism (Primary School)
Merton, South West London | £90 – £100 per day (Depending on experience) | PAYE only | Full-time | Temp to Permanent | ASAP Start

A welcoming primary school in Merton is seeking a 1:1 Autism Support Mentor / Teaching Assistant to join their nurturing team. You will be working closely with a child with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), supporting their learning, communication, and emotional development throughout the school day.

This is a mainstream primary school with a strong inclusive ethos. The team works closely with families, therapists, and external agencies to ensure children with Autism and additional needs are fully supported.

Your Role as a 1:1 Autism Support Mentor

Provide individualised support for a primary-aged child with Autism throughout the school day.

Use visual supports, structured routines, and sensory strategies to create a calm, supportive learning environment.

Support the child to access classroom learning, social play, and daily routines at their own pace.

Build a trusting and positive relationship to support emotional regulation and confidence.

Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and specialist staff to deliver tailored interventions and strategies.

Celebrate small steps of progress and promote independence wherever possible.
What We’re Looking For

Experience working with children with Autism, SEND, or additional needs (school, care, or youth settings).

A calm, patient, and nurturing approach.

Ability to communicate clearly and adapt to different learning and communication styles.

Understanding of Autism, sensory processing, or emotional regulation (training provided).

A genuine passion for inclusive education and helping every child feel valued.
This Role Would Suit Someone With Experience As A:

Teaching Assistant (SEND, Autism or SEMH)
-
Learning or Behaviour Mentor
-
Psychology or Education Graduate - you must have some placement experience
-
Or someone with compassion, consistency, and a genuine interest in supporting neurodiverse children - if you have personal experience and some type of proffesional experince this will help.
