Many of these children have experienced trauma, instability, or unmet emotional needs. They might struggle to trust adults, regulate their emotions, or stay engaged in learning, but with the right approach, they thrive. This school is looking for Autism Teaching Assistants who can bring empathy, structure, and humour to the classroom. What you will do each day Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with Autism Be a calm, consistent role model that pupils can depend on Help young people regulate emotions, manage anxiety, and develop resilience Support teachers and therapists to deliver tailored interventions Encourage pupils to rebuild confidence and celebrate small wins Understanding SEMH and Autism Autistic individuals can present with frustration, withdrawal, or challenging behaviour These pupils often need relational, therapeutic approaches rather than punishment Autistic pupils may process the world differently, they may struggle with social communication, sensory sensitivity, or sudden change, but bring unique strengths and creativity Your role is to help each child feel safe, valued, and capable.
