Special Needs Teaching Assistant - Primary School (1:1 and Small Group Support)

Merton, South West London | £90 – £100 per day | PAYE only | Full-time | Temp to Permanent | ASAP Start

A caring and inclusive Primary School in Merton is seeking a dedicated Autism & Speech and Language Support Mentor / Teaching Assistant to join their team. You’ll be supporting children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) on a 1:1 and small group basis, helping them build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections.

The school promotes a calm, structured, and communication-rich approach, using visual supports, Makaton, and sensory strategies to help pupils feel safe and understood.

You’ll be part of a supportive, experienced SEND team who value empathy, collaboration, and creativity in helping children succeed.

Your Role as an Autism & Speech and Language Support Mentor

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for primary-aged pupils with Autism and speech & language difficulties.

  • Use visual aids, structured routines, and communication systems (such as PECs or Makaton) to support understanding and expression.

  • Encourage and model social interaction, play, and communication skills throughout the school day.

  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and Speech and Language Therapist to implement tailored strategies and interventions.

  • Support emotional regulation and help children develop confidence and independence in their learning.

  • Celebrate every step of progress — helping each child reach their full potential.

What We’re Looking For

  • Experience supporting children with Autism or speech and language needs (in school, early years, or care settings).

  • A calm, patient, and encouraging approach.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to adapt to individual needs.

  • Understanding of SLCN, Autism, or sensory processing differences (training provided).

  • A genuine passion for inclusive education and helping children communicate and connect.

This Role Would Suit Someone With Experience As A:

  • Teaching Assistant (SEN, Autism, or Speech and Language focus)

  • Communication or Learning Support Assistant

  • Early Years Practitioner or SEN Support Worker

  • Psychology, Speech & Language Therapy, or Education Graduate

  • Or someone with empathy, consistency, and a genuine passion for helping children communicate and grow
