We are working with an ‘Outstanding’ special needs school based in Hackney and are looking for passionate, energetic, and nurturing SEN Teaching Assistants. The school caters for students with complex needs, a high number of students with ASC in early years and key stage 1 & 2. 

The school are looking for committed staff to stay with them long-term and can offer permanent opportunities. The school offers training and people development in any areas needed and can offer apprenticeships and help towards becoming a qualified teacher.

Key Responsibilities Learning Support Assistant

  • Provide 1:1 and group support to students with SEND, helping them access the curriculum.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of tailored learning activities under the guidance of the class teacher.
  • Support students with personal care needs when necessary (e.g., toileting, feeding, dressing).
  • Use visual aids, Makaton, or other communication tools to support students with communication difficulties.
  • Promote social interaction, independent learning, and self-esteem in all students.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to deliver individual education plans (IEPs) and monitor progress.
  • Provide a safe, nurturing environment where every child can thrive emotionally and academically.
  • Encourage positive behaviour through a consistent and caring approach, in line with the school's behaviour policy.
  • Support with physical and sensory needs, including helping with the use of specialist equipment where required.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working in an SEN setting or with children with SEND.
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people with special needs.
  • Knowledge of conditions such as ASC, ADHD, SEMH, and learning difficulties.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team, following guidance from teachers and other professionals.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different levels of understanding.
  • Patience, empathy, and a calm approach in challenging situations.
  • Willingness to undertake training in areas such as Makaton, PECS, or behaviour management strategies (training can be provided).
  • [Desirable] Relevant qualifications such as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Diploma, or training in SEN.
