We’re working with a forward-thinking specialist school in East London that supports young people aged 16–19 with a wide range of complex needs. Many of these students are neuro divergent, non-verbal, or require physical support — but they’re also musicians, artists, gamers, comedians, and thinkers. Here, learning might mean: Practising travel training to gain confidence on public transport. Preparing a meal with support. Managing sensory overload in a busy space. Learning to self-advocate, however that communication happens. Your role as a Post-16 Teaching Assistant is to support these young people emotionally, practically, and socially as they begin to explore adult life. You’ll work closely with teaching staff, therapists, and families to ensure that each student’s experience is purposeful, empowering, and person-centred. Your day-to-day might include: Supporting a small group of learners with personalised timetables. Assisting with life skills sessions — from cooking to money handling. Using tools like AAC, Makaton, or communication grids. Providing personal care (feeding, toileting, hoisting — training given). Helping students manage behaviours related to anxiety, trauma, or communication frustration.
