About the Role

PMLD Teaching Assistant
Barking and Dagenham
£85–£100 per day PAYE
Full-time (term time) | Long-term opportunity

“Connection is built in the quiet moments.”

In a calm, welcoming specialist school nestled in the heart of Barking and Dagenham, there's a classroom where learning looks a little different — quieter, slower, but no less profound.

The pupils here live with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Many are non-verbal, use wheelchairs, and have complex sensory and medical needs. Communication happens through subtle cues — an eye flicker, a smile, a sound — and you’ll learn to listen with more than your ears. This isn’t a noisy, fast-paced setting. It’s one where patience, presence, and emotional attunement are everything.

You’ll work closely with experienced teachers, therapists, and carers, supporting students 1:1 or in small groups. Together, you’ll deliver sensory-based, relationship-focused learning that values safety, trust, and emotional connection above all else.

What you'll be doing:

  • Supporting pupils with bespoke learning and care plans.

  • Using tools like PECS, visual timetables, sensory activities, and communication aids.

  • Assisting with personal care (toileting, feeding, hoisting — full training provided).

  • Helping students feel safe, seen, and supported through consistent, calm care.

  • Becoming a trusted presence in a child’s world that can often feel overwhelming.

What we’re looking for:

  • Emotional resilience, kindness, and a genuine willingness to learn.

  • No experience needed — but any background in care, support work, or SEND is a big plus.

  • A team player with a calm presence and open heart.

You’ll be joining a school that invests in its people — where development and reflection are part of the culture, and where staff feel truly valued.

If you're looking for a role where your presence can make a quiet but lasting difference, we’d love to hear from you.
