Secondary SEND Teacher - Primary Functioning
Meet Our Recruiter
About the Role
- SEN Secondary Teacher with Specialist Primary Functioning
- Long Term
- January 2026 Start
- M2 - M6 Pay Scale
Parker Smith Inclusion are supporting a secondary special school that caters for 11 - 17 year olds that have diagnoses of Speech Language Communication Needs and Moderate Learning Difficulties. The students may also be facing social emotional mental health needs (SEMH) and have dysregulated behaviours.
The students are secondary aged but are academically functioning at approximately Year 2 or Year 3 primary level. None of the students in the school are appropriate for mainstream secondary therefore I'm looking for candidates that have the ability to understand this and meet the students where they are at, not where you'd expect them to be, encouraging learning through play and creating friendships.
We are looking for a patient, resilient, nurturing SEN Teacher on a long term basis, with the potential to become permanent within two terms.
This role requires using teaching styles and strategies appropriate for primary learning. There are a high proportion of primary trained teachers currently working here because that is the curriculum level the students are working at.
What We Are Looking For
Experience and Background:
- Substantial long-term experience working with young people is required.
- While we find that primary teachers often do very well in this role, candidates must have an understanding of secondary education and the needs that come with teenagers.
- Special school experience, especially at the secondary level, is preferred.
Skills and Approach:
- You must be an empathetic, nurturing, and patient person.
- Staff need to be aware of the challenges and needs that the students have.
- Crucially, you must be willing to get involved, and actively encourage friendships, relationships, and interaction (including promoting play).
- You must meet the students "where they're at, not where you expect them to be".
- We require flexible individuals. Staff must understand the mixture of the students' age-appropriate behavior alongside their lower functional level.
