About the Role
Speech and Language Therapist (Secondary) – Band 5 and Band 6
- Kingston upon Thames, South West London / Surrey
- Full-time · Permanent · ASAP start
- Salary: £34,000–£45,000 per annum
Make a real difference to young people’s communication, confidence and independence. We’re recruiting a Speech and Language Therapist to work with secondary-aged students (11–19) in a nurturing specialist setting for Autism (ASC) and Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD).
About the school
You will feel at home if you like the mix of real therapy and real classrooms. You will work mainly with secondary-age students, splitting your week between class-based support and pull-out sessions, with protected time for notes, reports and EHCPs (so you’re not writing everything at 7pm). You will be part of a kind, tight MDT, teachers, SaLTs and OTs who actually plan together, and you will see the same pupils regularly enough to spot those small wins: a new word used spontaneously, a calmer transition, a brave answer in English. The school uses a total-communication approach, such as visuals, AAC, Makaton, and Shape Coding. The school will give you supervision, CPD, and sensible caseloads. It’s a warm, well-resourced setting that values relationships and progress over perfection, and you will have the space to try ideas, coach staff, and make a steady, visible difference.
The Speech and Language Therapist role (SaLT)
- Carry out holistic assessments and set measurable, termly communication targets.
- Plan and deliver individual, paired and small-group SaLT interventions
- Embed a total communication approach across classrooms (low/high-tech AAC, visuals, Makaton/key-word signing)
- Coach and upskill teaching/support staff; contribute to training and curriculum access
- Joint plan with teachers to integrate strategies (e.g., reduced rate of speech, repetition, chunking, explicit vocab teaching, Shape Coding)
- Write reports, contribute to EHCP reviews and multi-agency meetings, and work in partnership with families
About you
- HCPC-registered Speech and Language Therapist (Band 5/6)
- Newly qualified SaLTs are welcome (full support and supervision provided)
- Interest/experience in ASC, SpLD and social communication needs
- Collaborative, reflective and trauma-informed practice; strong organisation and communication
What you’ll get
- Small classes, a high staff-to-pupil ratio and a truly multidisciplinary team
- Ongoing CPD, supervision and clear development pathways
- Well-resourced, therapeutic environment focused on outcomes and wellbeing
