About the Role

Post 16 Complex Needs Teaching Assistant
Location: East London
Pay: £85 to £100 per day (PAYE)
Contract: Full time | Temp to Perm Opportunity

“Imagine helping a young person with complex needs take their first steps towards independence — and knowing you played a part in that journey.”

This role is not just about education — it is about preparing young people for life. We are working with a progressive, inclusive specialist school in East London that supports students aged 16 to 19 with a range of complex needs. Many are neurodivergent, non verbal, or require physical support — and they are also artists, gamers, musicians, deep thinkers, and full of potential.

Here, learning can look like:

  • Practising travel skills to build confidence on public transport

  • Preparing a simple meal with support

  • Managing sensory input in a busy space

  • Learning to self advocate — in whatever way that communication happens

As a Post 16 Teaching Assistant, your role is to support these young people emotionally, practically and socially as they begin to navigate the world of adulthood. You will work closely with teachers, therapists and families to make every day meaningful, empowering and tailored to each student’s individual journey.

Your day to day might include:

  • Supporting a small group of students on personalised timetables

  • Assisting with life skills sessions such as cooking and money handling

  • Using AAC, Makaton or communication grids to support interaction

  • Providing personal care (feeding, toileting, hoisting — full training provided)

  • Helping students manage behaviours linked to anxiety, trauma or communication needs

This role would suit someone who:

  • Has experience in SEND, care work or youth support — or is strongly motivated to enter this field

  • Is calm, patient and emotionally intelligent, especially in challenging moments

  • Understands that progress does not always look linear — it can be quiet, subtle and deeply meaningful

  • Wants to make a lasting difference as young people transition into adult life

This is the kind of role that asks for your full attention — but gives back in moments you will carry with you long after the school day ends.
