About the Role
PS Inclusion are always looking for a committed and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistants in the London Borough of Newham for PRU, SEMH or MS School settings, to work full-time during term time. You will play a crucial role in supporting children who may display verbal or physical aggression and require a calm, patient, and understanding approach to help them thrive.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored 1:1 and group support to children with SEMH needs.
- Build trusting relationships with pupils to promote their emotional well-being and resilience.
- Support children in developing coping strategies and managing anxieties or challenging behaviours effectively.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and external agencies to deliver consistent and nurturing support.
- Assist in creating and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.
- Implement strategies to de-escalate situations of aggression or heightened emotions, ensuring the safety and well-being of all pupils and staff.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of Individual Behaviour Plans (IBPs) and other supportive documentation.
- Promote inclusion and positive behaviour through role modelling and supportive interventions.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs in a school, youth work, or mental health setting.
- Confidence in managing and supporting children who may display verbal or physical aggression.
- A calm, empathetic, and proactive approach to challenging situations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build relationships with pupils and colleagues.
- An understanding of the impact of trauma, poverty, and mental health issues on children’s behaviour and learning.
- A commitment to inclusion and a passion for helping young people overcome barriers to education.
Desirable:
- Training in de-escalation strategies or behaviour management (e.g., Team Teach, MAPA).
- Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches or mental health first aid.

This school caters to children with a wide range of learning difficulties, Autism/ASC, and complex needs. Many of the children have Speech and Language Communication Needs (SLCN), with some being non-verbal and others using wheelchairs or requiring mobility support.

You will need to be an energetic, creative person with lots of personality to be playful with the child and understand that they will be looking to you as their immediate support in any scenario.

Are you looking to work with a friendly and supportive team in a fantastic Mainstream Secondary School supporting young people with SEND?
I am working with a fantastic outstanding secondary school in North East London that is looking for two experienced secondary teaching assistants to join their supportive team. They are looking for suitable candidates who have experience working with secondary students with SEN, ideally experience with ASD, ADHD and Physical and/or Sensory needs. This experience can be previous work experience or personal experience.
These roles are going to be 1:1 working with the child within their mainstream lessons and assisting them around the school, one child is in Year 11 and the other is in Year 8, both struggle with discipline and require a TA that has the balance of nurture and authority, ability to implement the schools rules and regulations.
