About the Role
Job Title: SEMH Teacher
Location: Hackney
Salary: Competitive (depending on experience)
Contract: Full-time, Permanent
Start Date: Immediate
Are you passionate about helping students who face barriers to mainstream education? Do you thrive in a role where you can make a profound difference in the lives of young people who need it most?
About the Role
We are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teacher to join a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) based in Hackney. This school supports students who are unable to access mainstream education, offering both long-term and short-term placements. With state-of-the-art facilities, including ample outdoor space, the school provides a safe and nurturing environment for some of the most vulnerable, at-risk, and hard-to-reach students in the community.
In this role, you will be responsible for teaching students who have social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, focusing on helping them overcome challenges so they can re-engage with education. Understanding the SEMH needs of these young people is crucial, as emotional and behavioural support must come before academic progress.
What We're Looking For:
- A therapeutic approach to teaching and the ability to create a nurturing learning environment.
- Specialism in Social Emotional Mental Health (SEMH) or experience working with students who face emotional and behavioural challenges.
- Experience using positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
- A positive role model who can build strong, trusting relationships with vulnerable young people.
- Experience with SEMH, trauma-informed teaching, sensory processing challenges, and social communication difficulties.
- Ability to engage with students who have challenging behaviour and create a structured, safe learning space.
What You Can Expect:
- To work in a setting that prioritises the well-being and personal development of students, alongside a team that shares your dedication to helping young people.
- Opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary therapy teams.
- The chance to work closely with students who have become disengaged from education and help them reconnect.
- Extensive training and professional development from specialists in SEMH.
- The opportunity to gain valuable experience across a range of SEND needs.
Requirements:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS).
- Experience working with students who are disengaged from mainstream education and have additional needs, whether in a mainstream or SEND setting.
- A nurturing, empathetic, and patient approach, with a focus on holistic support.
- While experience in SEMH settings is beneficial, we are also keen to hear from teachers who are passionate about making their first move into specialist SEND education.
