I am seeking an experienced Mental Health Support Worker to join a passionate and therapeutic school in South West London.

The Responsibilities of a Mental Health Support Worker

  • To build and maintain meaningful relationships with children
  • To enable access to learning for all pupils and assist the teacher in managing pupils and the classroom.
  • To undertake learning, care or support programmes for individuals or groups of pupils.
  • To help organise personalised classroom activities, prepare resources and maintain the learning environment.

 

Understanding complex Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)

Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) issues involve difficulties managing emotions, relationships, and behaviour in children and young people. Children dealing with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges come from various backgrounds. Some face tough family situations, like conflicts or not getting enough support. Others might feel stressed due to money problems or scary events they've experienced. Some children might have differences in their brains or genes that make handling emotions harder. Problems at school, like bullying, can also make SEMH issues worse. Understanding these backgrounds helps in offering the right support to kids dealing with SEMH challenges, tailored to their unique situations and needs. These challenges can lead to:

  • Social Issues: Trouble in making friends, understanding social cues, or conflicts in relationships.
  • Emotional Challenges: Difficulty in regulating emotions, leading to outbursts, anxiety, or depression.
  • Impact on Learning: Problems in focusing, attending school, and academic performance.

 

The Ideal Mental Health Support Worker - School-Based

  • Has experience supporting students with Autism, SEMH, and dysregulated behaviour – even if you do not have formal experience, I want to hear from you!
  • The ideal Mental Health Support Worker must be resilient and adapt to challenging situations
  • Can build and maintain strong relationships whilst enforcing boundaries
  • Is committed to changing the lives of vulnerable young people and will go above and beyond at all time
  • A background in Creative arts or a BSc/MSc in Psychology/Forensic Science/Criminology/Social sciences/Education Studies
  • Restraint training such as Team Teach, MAPA, Positive Behaviour, etc is preferred.
