Are you an experienced and passionate individual with a commitment to supporting young people who face barriers to mainstream education? We are seeking a dedicated Behaviour Mentor to work in our independent school in Newham, providing support to children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), and other additional needs.

About the School 

This role is in an independent school that provides education for children who do not have access to mainstream schools. Our students face a variety of challenges, including dysregulated behaviour and engagement difficulties. We are focused on creating a supportive, therapeutic, and inclusive environment that helps young people overcome barriers and thrive both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students who display SEMH, ADHD, ASC, and additional needs.
  • Support students in managing dysregulated behaviour and increasing engagement with their learning.
  • Work with students in a one-to-one and small group setting, providing tailored behaviour support and interventions.
  • Implement positive behaviour strategies in line with the school’s ethos to help students develop self-regulation and emotional resilience.
  • Collaborate with teachers, other mentors, and external professionals to develop and implement personalised support plans for each student.
  • Promote safeguarding and the well-being of all students, identifying and responding to concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Be a role model of positive behaviour and a key source of guidance for students.

Requirements

  • Previous experience working with young people displaying SEMH needs, ADHD, ASC, and additional needs.
  • Experience working in Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), youth work, community work, or similar roles is highly desirable.
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging environments, remaining calm and resilient when faced with dysregulated behaviour.
  • A proactive, patient, and empathetic approach to supporting vulnerable young people.
  • Ability to engage with students and encourage them to participate in their education, helping to remove barriers to learning.
  • Commitment to working 5 days per week.
