We are looking for a Family Engagement Officer to join a MS Primary School based in Newham, working to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) or Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. In this role, you will work closely with families to help them understand their child’s unique needs and empower them to navigate available support systems with confidence and compassion.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with families from diverse ethnic backgrounds, ensuring they feel understood, supported, and valued.
- Act as a key point of contact for parents and carers, offering guidance on their child’s SEND or SEMH needs.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with families, using a variety of methods including face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and written communication.
- Liaise with professionals such as teachers, social workers, and healthcare providers to ensure holistic support for each child.
- Deliver pastoral support, ensuring families feel empowered to advocate for their children within the school and wider community.
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and implement effective engagement strategies that support the overall well-being of the children and their families.
- Attend relevant meetings, case conferences, and training to stay up-to-date with best practices in SEND and SEMH support.
Requirements:
- Proven experience in engagement, communications, or pastoral support, ideally within a SEND, SEMH, or family support setting.
- A deep understanding of the challenges faced by families from ethnic minority backgrounds, with a compassionate and culturally sensitive approach.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport quickly and effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively with both families and professionals in a multidisciplinary environment.
- A proactive, empathetic, and non-judgmental attitude.
- Ability to manage a caseload and work flexibly to meet the needs of the families.
